Opening Remarks at Enhancing Clean Energy Substitution to Turbocharge Global Climate Action

UNFCCC Pavilion at COP 29

Excellencies,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

Thank you for the opportunity to contribute to this important event organized by Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization.

The world is coming together in Baku to address one of the most urgent challenges of our time: the need to speed up global climate action and transition to a sustainable, low-carbon future.
The stark reality of climate change is upon us. Global temperatures have already risen by nearly 1.2 degrees since pre-industrial times, bringing us dangerously close to the 1.5-degree limit set by the Paris Agreement.

According to the latest reports, global greenhouse gas emissions have risen by 1.3 per cent in the past year alone.

Current policies are leading us towards a catastrophic 3.1-degree rise by the end of the century.

The Pact for the Future, adopted by world leaders at the Summit of the Future last September, guides us in tackling these challenges. It reminds us that we have a shared responsibility to act quickly and decisively.

It stresses that our response must be based on the best available science and guided by the principles of equity and common but differentiated responsibilities. These are principles at the foundation of our commitment under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement.

But words alone are not enough. We need deep, rapid, and sustained reductions in emissions. We call on all countries to contribute¡ªbased on their national circumstances¡ªto the global effort to triple renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency improvements by 2030.

Transitioning to a clean energy future is not just essential to avoid a climate crisis¡ªit¡¯s also a powerful driver of sustainable development, economic growth, and social transformation.

This transition must prioritize equity and inclusion, ensuring that developing countries and vulnerable communities are supported at every step.

Renewable energy sources like wind and solar now make up 18.7 per cent of global energy consumption, but this growth is still not fast enough.

By supporting initiatives that link clean energy systems, GEIDCO is helping to lower energy costs, improve access, and ensure that the benefits of the energy transition are shared by all.

I commend GEIDCO for its efforts and ongoing commitment to promoting global energy interconnection.

The road ahead will not be easy, but by working together and building inclusive, transformative partnerships, we can create a future that is sustainable, resilient, and equitable for everyone.

Thank you!
