Session 2.2: 2024 & 2025 Summits for SDG Acceleration
Dear Resident Coordinators,
Next year, we will host the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development and the Second World Social Summit. These landmark events will allow the international community to build on the Pact for the Future as well as follow-up and accelerate action on other global commitments.
In July, FFD4 world leaders must adopt ambitious reforms that deliver affordable and predictable long-term financing at scale ¨C and deliver the SDG Stimulus.
The Conference will also tackle the reform of the international financial architecture by ensuring that developing countries have a voice in the governance, business practices and instruments of international financial institutions so that they deliver meaningful solutions that leave no one behind.
This is particularly important at a time where low ¨C and lower-middle-income countries face severe economic constraints. The ability of these countries to recover and build resilience following years of unprecedented shocks is severely constrained by an outdated financial architecture.
Equally important in November next year, the Second World Social Summit will commit to the three pillars of social development and will the rebuild trust needed to meet the challenges of today¡¯s world, and bridge growing gaps in equity, inclusion, social protection and non-discrimination.
To do so, we need to enhance financing of essential social services, including through truly progressive taxation and ensuring a clearer alignment of national budgets with the goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda. We must scale up investment in education, health care, sanitation, clean energy, housing and social protection.
Dear Colleagues,
We have started intense preparations for the two conferences and the coming months will be quite busy for Member States and the UN system.
The remaining FFD4 preparatory process includes a multi-stakeholder meeting this month in New York; regional consultations over the coming months and another three sessions of the preparatory committee.
The preparations for the World Summit for Social Development will be carried out in a most effective, well-structured and broad participatory manner.
A meaningful Social Summit must acknowledge and respond to people¡¯s realities and expectations.
In this context, your roles as Resident Coordinators is crucial. You can raise awareness and advocate for the importance of these Summits including amongst your government counterparts and stakeholders.
You can also support by rallying the UN country teams around policy priorities, provision of technical expertise and building capacity.
DESA is here to support your work in this very important direction.
Thank you!
