Inspired by the Australian Indigenous practice of ¡®cool burning¡¯ Associate Professor Dmytro Matsypura of the Business School at the University of Sydney, a UNAI member institution, is using modern mathematical optimisation skills to produce precise guidelines for when and where to conduct controlled burns, saving forests, wildlife and reducing carbon emissions (SDG 15). Professor Matsypura¡¯s research is part of the School¡¯s SDG project ¡®SDGs by 2030 ¨C are we on track?¡¯ a digital resource showing how academics at the University of Sydney are working to achieve specific SDG targets. The endeavour includes 29 short narratives, infographics and student assignments that can be used as teaching prompts for academics looking to incorporate the SDGs into their course guides.
