Qatar Formalizes $10 Million Contribution to Support Least Developed Countries
The government of Qatar, through Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), has officially deposited the instrument of ratification for a landmark $10 million Contribution Agreement with the United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS).
This formal step brings the agreement into effect, marking a crucial milestone in advancing the implementation of the Doha Programme of Action (DPoA) for Least Developed Countries (LDCs).
The agreement, initially signed during the 79th UN General Assembly, is part of Qatar's $60 million commitment announced at the Fifth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) in March 2023. With the first tranche of $4 million set to be disbursed shortly, this contribution is set to accelerate the implementation of the Doha Program of Action, a comprehensive roadmap designed to address the structural challenges faced by LDCs over the next decade.
Mr. Fahad Hamad Al-Sulaiti, Director General of Qatar Fund for Development, emphasized the significance of this partnership: "This contribution epitomizes Qatar's unwavering commitment to fostering global solidarity and sustainable development. By joining forces with UN-OHRLLS, we are not just providing financial support; we are investing in a vision of a more equitable world. For her part, her Excellency Alya Ahmed Saif Al Thani, Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, stated: ¡°Qatar¡¯s contribution underscores our nation¡¯s unwavering dedication to multilateralism and the global development agenda. The Doha Programme of Action represents a shared vision for a more inclusive and sustainable future, and we are proud to support its implementation. This partnership with UN-OHRLLS is a testament to Qatar¡¯s belief in the power of collective action to uplift the most vulnerable and create lasting change.¡±
The formalization of this agreement enables UN-OHRLLS to intensify its efforts in delivering impactful programs aligned with DPoA priorities. The partnership will focus on strengthening institutional capacities and leveraging innovative solutions to tackle the multifaceted challenges faced by LDCs, including poverty eradication, climate adaptation, and sustainable development.
