Peacebuilding Partners - Sweden
Sweden
December 2024?
Sweden has been steadfast in its support for United Nations conflict prevention and peacebuilding efforts. Sweden recognizes the Peacebuilding Architecture, including the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC), the Peacebuilding Fund (PBF), and the Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO), as an essential framework for addressing challenges of conflict and instability worldwide.
Sweden is a member of the PBC as one of the top financial contributors to the UN. Sweden particularly champions the Youth, Peace and Security and the Women, Peace and Security agendas. It has called for better implementation of the PBC Gender Strategy Action Plan and of its Strategic Action Plan on Youth and Peacebuilding. Sweden also chairs the PBC Liberia Configuration and has done so since 2012.
Sweden has long invested in the PBF, enabling UN system support to governments and societies dealing with complex conflict risks. Sweden is the third largest donor to the PBF, having contributed over $283 million to the Fund since its inception, including more than $108 million for the 2020每2024 PBF Strategy Period. Sweden also co-chairs the Group of Friends for the PBF.
Through its funding, Sweden enables the PBF to help build peaceful, inclusive, and resilient societies and have an impact on the ground. Sweden supports the PBF*s efforts to build and sustain peace globally 每 a critical enabler for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda.
Amidst political instability and heightened insecurity in the Sahel, peacebuilding remains a priority. During the 2020每2024 PBF Strategy Period, over $240 million was approved for Sahel countries, representing almost 30% of total global approvals. Sweden supports PBF investments in cross-border cooperation in the Sahel, recognizing that conflict drivers often have a regional origin with widespread impact due to spillovers.
Sweden is also a strong advocate for the Fund*s emphasis on addressing climate change and climate-related security risks. Sweden*s support for the PBF also advances gender equality by strengthening women's rights, representation, and access to resources. It also drives efforts to enhance funding for local initiatives, empowering women peacebuilders and engaging youth in peacebuilding.
