Call for science briefs for the 2016 Global Sustainable Development Report
The Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR) is a United Nations publication aiming to strengthen the science-policy interface at the UN High Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development, and provide a strong evidence-based instrument to support policymakers in promoting poverty eradication and sustainable development.
With the establishment of the UN High-level Political Forum (HLPF) in 2012, Governments have created an entry point for scientists across the world to be heard at the highest levels of the United Nations. The call for science briefs – concise, factual, peer reviewed, open access – contributions from scientists and researchers that highlight issues, research findings or solutions is a unique opportunity to bring scientific issues to the attention of policy makers.

Enlightened Universe, an interactive sculpture for UN70
In New York's Central Park earlier this month, Ban Ki-moon unveiled Enlightened Universe, an interactive sculpture by renowned Spanish artist Cristobal Gabarron created in honour of the UN's 70th anniversary. The commemorative art installation depicts 70 life-size figures joined in hand around a central globe, creating a human chain of global citizenship, solidarity, tolerance, respect for nature, and shared responsibility. As part of its continued effort to highlight the pressing need for primary education for all, officially launched a new book at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris in October. Entitled 'Challenges & Reality'. Educate a child is a global programme of the . The volume contains a new collection of images of out of school children from photojournalist Maher Attar. Educate A Child commissioned the book as a means to bring attention to the world's children who have not had their right to a primary education fulfilled.

A Q&A with Doug Roche – The UN in the 21st Century
Prof.?Douglas Roche appeared at the United Nations Bookshop in New York on 8 October to launch his new book titled: The UN in the 21st Century. Prof. Roche was Canada's Ambassador for disarmament, and was appointed to the Canadian Senate from 1998-2004. 24 October is an important day in the UN calendar! Learn more from the below:
UN Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being.
24 October has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948. In 1971, the United Nations General Assembly recommended that the day be observed by Member States as a public holiday.

70th Anniversary of the United Nations: Turn the World Blue!

World famous landmarks from Australia's Sydney Opera House to the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, from the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro to the Empire State Building in New York, will take part.
Participating in the Turn the World UN Blue campaign offers the unique opportunity to?help unite global citizens, promote the message of peace, development and human?rights, and showcase your commitment to the ideals and principles of dignity and?prosperity for all.

Silent Heroes – Civil Society and the Refugee Crisis
On 15th October, Youth Delegates of Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria and Germany convened at the German Mission to the United Nations?for a panel discussion regarding the current plight of refugees and the silent heroes who are helping.
The panellists discussed the power that grassroots civic organizations can have to assist those seeking asylum, the legal rights and representations of refugees seeking asylum, as well as?refugees and the United Nations and future decision making. One panellist, Ellie Alter noted the global nature of this issue, that 'the refugee crisis is not just a European crisis'.
