We are developing our United Nations-system-wide practical guidance on security sector reform for a wide audience - from policy makers to practitioners. When completed, will contain dozens of short, state-of-the-art modules on the widest range of SSR areas.

Policy Brief Series
The Policy Brief Series on Good Governance in National Security is an initiative by the United Nations Interagency Security Sector Reform Taskforce in collaboration with the World Bank Group. It was made possible by a grant from the United Nations¡¯ Humanitarian ¨C Development ¨C Peacebuilding and Partnership Facility hosted by the Peacebuilding Support Office.
The series comprises nine policy briefs drafted by leading experts in the fields of fragility, conflict studies, governance, and economic development. These Policy Briefs jointly offer a framework for analyzing the fragility and conflict drivers and risks to peace, security and development associated with weak security sector governance. They also explore innovative approaches to building capable, efficient, resilient, sustainable, inclusive, and accountable security institutions.
SSuRGe Team
Our '' is how we call the United Nations Standing Capacity for Security Sector Reform and Governance. It provides impactful short-term support in response to requests from governments, regional organizations, United Nations entities and United Nations country teams. The team is based at the United Nations logistics hub in Brindisi, Italy - but it is formally part of the United Nations Headquarters. This ensures that our support is truly grounded in both policy and practice.
Climate Change and SSR Side Event at COP29
On Friday 15 November 2024, COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan hosted a first-of-its-kind, pioneering side event on how national security institutions must be urgently strengthened to provide accountable and effective security during the climate crisis. Security Sector Reform and Women, Peace and Security
Advancing equal opportunities for women in defence is of paramount importance for keeping, building, and sustaining peace. Representation and diversity allow Member States to leverage broadened skillsets and improves operational effectiveness as well as community trust. The need for diverse perspective and skills in the defence sector is more critical than ever. Through security sector reform, governments can work towards the full, equal, safe and meaningful participation of women in security and defence institutions.
