Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS) Annual Meeting

Every year, the Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS) hosts a three-day Annual Meeting, drawing together 250–350 academics and practitioners from around the world. This year, the Annual Meeting is being held 15–17 June, at Sookmyung Women's University, Seoul, Korea in co-operation with the Korean Academic Council on the United Nations System (KACUNS).

The theme for this year's Annual Meeting is Revitalizing the United Nations for Human Rights, Peace and Development. The organizers anticipate informative presentations and lively discussions on this general topic and on a number of subthemes such as the promotion and protection of human rights; the challenges of peace and development; supporting global civil education; and the dynamics of relations amongst Asian states on issues of human rights, peace and development, and how these take shape within the UN framework.

Trash fashion

Kickstarting the week-long celebration was the trash fashion show on April 16. Some 20 students transformed upcycled garbage materials into 13 self-designed fashion statements presented on the catwalk at the Envision Pavilion outside of the Himalayas Museum. The spokesperson said that the High Commissioner would go ahead with a meeting this afternoon in New York with Mr. Capriles' lawyer who would share a report prepared by Mr. Capriles.

Scale of civilians fleeing Iraq's Mosul 'staggering' – senior UN relief official

Noting that nearly half a million people have fled Mosul since the start of military operations to retake the city from Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL/Da'esh) terrorists, a senior United Nations humanitarian official in Iraq warned that the scale of the displacement has stretched relief efforts to their operational limits.

Our worst case scenario when the fighting started was that up to one million civilians may flee Mosul. Already, more than 493,000 people have left, leaving almost everything behind, Lise Grande, the Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq, said in a news release issued by the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
